FAQs

Emergency electrical

Urgent faults, safety risks, and when to call first — before work starts, describe what you see and hear so we can prioritise correctly.

How much does an emergency electrical call-out cost in Victoria?

Emergency work is usually priced as a call-out or attendance fee plus labour (and materials if needed). Costs vary by time of day, travel, and complexity — after-hours attendance typically costs more than standard business hours. Jeremy will explain how pricing works when you call and can often give a ballpark once the situation is described. For a firm price, an on-site assessment may be needed after the property is made safe.

What counts as an electrical emergency, and when should I call straight away?

Treat it as urgent if you smell burning from outlets or the switchboard, see sparks or damaged cables, have repeated tripping that cannot be reset safely, partial or full loss of power only to your property (not the whole street), water near electrical equipment, or storm damage affecting your installation. If anyone is at risk or there is fire, follow emergency services advice first (000). If safe to do so, switch off at the main switch and call a licensed electrician.

How quickly can Mains Electrical & Data respond to an urgent job?

Standard hours are 8am–5pm Monday–Friday with after-hours services available — exact attendance depends on where you are (Bendigo, nearby towns, or wider Victoria), current workload, and travel. Call 0400 564 780 and we’ll give you an honest expectation for arrival and any immediate safety steps to take while you wait.

Do you offer fixed-price quotes for urgent electrical work?

Where the scope is clear after a quick assessment, we aim to quote clearly before starting. Some faults need investigation on site before the full repair scope is known — in those cases we’ll explain what we’re checking, what it might involve, and how we’ll confirm price before proceeding with larger repairs. Payment options can be discussed when you book.

What kinds of problems need a Level 2 (ASP) electrician?

Level 2 work relates to the connection between your installation and the electricity network — for example consumer mains between the point of supply and switchboard, certain metering setups, overhead or underground service lines, and network-related faults. These jobs need the right accreditation and coordination with the distributor. If your issue involves the service from the street or supply-side equipment, say so when you call so we can route the job correctly.

Can you help with urgent installations, not only repairs?

Yes — when timing is critical we can prioritise scoped installation work such as safety improvements, critical circuits, or planned upgrades that cannot wait — subject to availability and compliance requirements. Repairs remain the usual priority for emergency response; tell us your deadline (e.g. deadline before handover or an event) so we can advise honestly what’s achievable.

FAQs

Residential electrical

Homes around Bendigo and regional Victoria — renovations, lighting, EV chargers, rewiring, and general upgrades.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard when renovating an older home?

Often yes — older boards may use outdated protection or lack sufficient capacity for modern appliances, air conditioning, or EV charging. Renovations are a sensible time to upgrade so new circuits and safety switching are coordinated in one plan. Signs you may need an upgrade include ceramic fuses, frequent tripping, overheating, or adding major loads. Jeremy can inspect your existing board and quote an upgrade aligned with your renovation.

How do lighting upgrades usually work?

We start with how you use each space, ceiling height, switching, and budget — then propose layouts and fittings (including LED options) that meet the Wiring Rules. Installation time depends on room count, ceiling access, and whether plaster repairs are in scope. You’ll get compliant installation with documentation suited to warranty and insurance expectations.

Can you install an EV charger at my house?

Yes. We assess switchboard capacity, mains and earthing, available supply, and the charger type suited to your vehicle. Some homes need a supply or board upgrade before a charger can be installed safely. Most straightforward installs are completed in a single visit once design is agreed; certification and compliance paperwork are part of the service.

How do I know if my home needs rewiring?

Older homes may still have cabling that doesn’t match today’s loads or safety expectations — especially if over several decades old, using rubber or cotton-insulated conductors, or if you notice flickering, warm outlets, or shocks from appliances. A structured inspection helps decide whether partial or full rewiring is warranted. We’ll outline options and sequencing to minimise disruption.

What’s involved in installing extra power points?

We check the circuit capacity, routing, wall construction, and whether RCBO or additional circuits are needed — especially in kitchens and wet areas. Weatherproof or USB outlets can be included. Simple additions may be quick; others need new circuits from the switchboard. Everything is installed to AS/NZS 3000 and tested before handover.

FAQs

Commercial electrical

Offices, retail, light industrial — fit-outs, LED upgrades, maintenance, and scheduling around your operations.

What does a commercial electrician do for businesses?

Commercial work covers tenancy fit-outs, retail and office lighting, switchboards, three-phase supplies where applicable, equipment circuits, emergency lighting pathways, testing and maintenance programmes, and fault response — aligned to higher duty cycles and compliance expectations than typical residential jobs. We tailor scope to your hours of operation and shutdown windows.

Can you design and install lighting for office or retail fit-outs?

Yes — we collaborate on layout, lux targets, emergency egress lighting where required, controls (sensors, zones), and energy-efficient fittings. Wiring and commissioning are documented for handover and future maintenance. Larger projects may be staged around your trading hours.

How does an LED upgrade work for commercial premises?

We review existing fittings, ceiling height, maintenance access, and energy baseline — then propose LED replacements or retrofits (e.g. high-bay, panels, strip) with payback and maintenance benefits in mind. Upgrades are usually staged to limit downtime; disposal of old lamps may need to follow local requirements for commercial waste.

Do commercial sites need regular electrical maintenance?

Yes — periodic inspection, thermal checks where appropriate, test-and-tag for portable equipment (where you adopt that programme), RCD verification, and scheduled repairs reduce unplanned outages and support insurance and WHS expectations. We can propose a maintenance rhythm that matches your building and risk profile.

Can work be done outside business hours or on weekends?

Often yes — many commercial clients prefer evenings or weekends for shutdowns, lighting upgrades, or board work to avoid trading disruption. Book ahead where possible; after-hours rates may apply depending on timing. We coordinate access, isolation, and re-energisation with your team.
